A Light in the Darkness

Have you ever gotten up in the middle of the night and accidentally tripped or bumped

into something while walking through a dark room? Perhaps the worst of all is stubbing

a toe—ouch!

The Bible tells us that living a life steeped in sin is much like staggering around in the

dark. Proverbs 4:19 reads, “But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not

know what makes them stumble.”

While we may sometimes be fortunate enough to navigate a dark room and walk away

unscathed, sin always leaves problems and pain in its wake. Sin hurts us. Sin hurts the

people we care about. But thankfully, God has given us a way to see our path—with His

Word! The psalmist wrote, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm

119:105).

If you ever find that sin has distorted your vision, confused your way, or hindered your

relationship with God, just open your Bible! The Word of God can be trusted to lead us.

It helps us navigate all of life’s unexpected turns. It teaches us to discern right from

wrong—pointing out our next steps and warning us of that which might cause us to

stumble and fall.

And most importantly, the Bible, which is the written Word, points us to the Living

Word—Jesus! Jesus is the true light, and He gives us a new heart that turns from

darkness and increasingly longs for righteousness! As Jesus Himself said, “Whoever

follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life!” (John 8:12)

Friend, no matter what you may be walking through, know that God’s desire is not for

you to stumble helplessly through darkness. He deeply loves you, so much so that He

gave you His Word, illuminating your path and helping you to grow more and more like

Jesus—“the light of the world” (John 8:12).

What is one way that sin has impaired your vision or made it difficult to discern the right

next step? Spend some time finding a passage of Scripture that speaks to that issue.

How can the truth of God’s Word cast light into that particular area of your life?

heart, joy
